Best Weed In Amsterdam

Who has the best weed in Amsterdam?
This has to be one of the most common questions we’re asked. And believe me, the team at AmsterdamCoffeeshops.com takes the question very seriously. Frankly, we lose sleep over it. We are constantly pounding the pavement to survey the inventory. We have visited every shop, and will keep visiting every shop. We debate the merits of the strains, often in taste-testing sessions that run late into the night. Hey, we never said this was a rough job! But we do take it very seriously. And our team has decades of experience seeking out quality cannabis. But enough about us. Let’s get on with the Best Weed in Amsterdam list for 2017. On it are one dozen shops that simply have OUTSTANDING cannabis flower. If you are in the city, we highly recommend stopping by some (all?) of them. These are listed in no special order. These are all amazing shops for bud!
The name of this shop translates as “Farmer Boys” in English, speaking to this shop’s focus on the craft of cultivation. Boerejongens’ cannabis stock is grown from Amsterdam Genetics seed. This is a well-known breeder in regional competitions, and has numerous awards to their name. They tend to develop a lot of contemporary West Coast USA hybrid strains including some solid Kush varieties, known for pungency and potency. In recent years their shops (there are actually two Boerejongens and a third called Bij) have earned a reputation for stocking a wide variety of very top shelf flower.
This iconic Amsterdam coffeeshop has a longstanding reputation for high quality cannabis flower. Further, their selection tends to be remarkable. Even many years ago, when it was typical for most shops to host a fairly short menu, Dampkring would have a LONG list of available strains – roughly two dozen at any given time. And this is just flower. Even with managing such variety, the quality tends to be great here. As for genetics, this shop works with a wide variety of breeders, and also has its own line of classic Dampkring strains.
Eerste Hulp (“First Help”) is a favorite shop for many locals and visitors alike. They are much lower key than some of the other “high profile” coffeeshops in Amsterdam. They don’t advertise all that much (Amsterdam laws make this difficult), nor do they own souvenir shops or smoke friendly eateries. They are a modest independent local shop. However, 1e Hulp has a reputation for high quality cannabis… one they appear to have earned primarily through years of hard work. Most people learn about them, first and foremost, through word of mouth as well. That speaks to something. We’re regular visitors here ourselves, and can’t recall being disappointed.
Seriously… did we even need to list these guys? GreenHouse is simply legendary for its focus on cannabis genetics. The vast majority of shops and breeders in this world are content crossbreeding common strains, trying to develop new tastes and potencies. We love that work, don’t get us wrong. However, the team at GreenHouse is at a whole different level. They travel the globe looking for landrace strains: original unique cannabis lineages. The root genetics, if you will. VICE recently followed them to the Congo where they obtained a new strain unknown to the West. I can’t think of another coffeeshop in Amsterdam that is as dedicated to cannabis genetics. They have their own seed line of course, Green House seeds.
This is essentially a take-and-go shop, though there is some limited seating here. They reside at the north end of the city center, and see a lot of foot traffic from people coming into the city. But the popularity of this shop is unquestionably due to one thing: cannabis quality. Voyagers works with some solid breeders on their strains. The selection isn’t enormous. Expect to find maybe 6-10 strains on the menu. Not as many as Dampkring, for sure. However, the quality tends to be really on point here. You usually have a hard time picking. This shop has become a first-stop for many a cannabis connoisseur visiting the city.
You CAN’T make a best weed list without including this shop. Like Voyagers, Grey Area isn’t much to speak of with regard to size, seating, or amenities. There are a few chairs, some stools, a few corners to squeeze into if you want. Otherwise, this place is a take-and go. Their reputation for weed, however, is nothing short of legendary. This shop is owned by Americans, and used to specialize in American “eighths” complete in traditional non-zip sandwich bags. They would offer absolutely outstanding weed at very fair prices. They would always pack out with crowds, just looking to grab some weed and go. They have evolved a bit over the years. Now you’ll find regular gram baggies, and the pricing isn’t as reasonable as it once was. However, the inventory here has remained just as top notch. We’d never hesitate to recommend them.
This is another Amsterdam classic coffeeshop that has grown quite large off its reputation for quality flower. This shop used to a major player in the Amsterdam cannabis competition every year, probably the only close competition for Green House some of those years. They haven’t been as active lately, however, presumably because the USA organizers stopped doing the show, and the ones running now are much smaller. However, Barney’s still has its long-earned reputation for competition winning strains. Ever since the early 2000s, their shops have also catered largely to higher end clientele. Pricing is not the lowest here, but they do keep things consistent. Stop in, and you’re sure to find something pungent and flavorful. Barney’s continues to stand out for quality, and we continue to recognize them for it.
People that live in Amsterdam, no doubt, have an advantage over visitors when it comes to sniffing out quality. You are less distracted by the flash, and eventually find the shops that serve the best quality or value. De Kade screams of this… and is for sure another locals’ favorite shop. At present they seem to be working with an awesome grower. Their strains actually have some of our highest scores recently, if you look at our video reviews. They have a good mix as well, including some stand out contemporary varieties. We have no hesitation recommending this shop.
Mr. K & Co.
This is another locals’ favorite shop. Mr. K & Co. are currently working with Devil’s Harvest and Lady Sativa Genetics for their flower stock. The quality has been pretty outstanding. While they do carry an old-school variety or two, think Thai or White Widow, this shop is really known for contemporary strains. Think “Gorilla Glue” from Colorado… “Kosher Kush” from Cali. They try to stock rare strains when they can, so the inventory isn’t all “same same” when you walk in here. You can always expect to see an unusual item or two on the menu.
This shop is another one with a really impressive menu. Again, there are a lot of contemporary strains here. Easy Times has some of the best Kosher Kush we’ve ever smoked, in fact! And that is one of the favorites strains among our staff (that and Gorilla Glue), so when we find it, we usually grab it. If you see this on the menu, we highly recommend at least giving it a sniff before you choose. Can you say PUNGENT?!
Coffeeshop “The Balloon” also makes our Best Weed in Amsterdam list. This is another Iconic Amsterdam shop, with a long presence in this city. Het Ballonnetje recently caught the public’s attention when actor Samuel L. Jackson was photographed visiting Het Ballonnetje, though of course this major celebrity appearance did not influence our rankings. In recent years, we’ve noticed that the management has really been focusing on their cannabis inventory, and putting out some great flower in particular. We’re often back, and always look forward to seeing what’s new on the menu. This is another great shop for weed, folks!
A shop with two cup wins already this year for flower closes out our Best Weed list. Bagheera is new on our radar, but certainly a shop we are keeping an eye on now. The inventory here has been remarkably high quality as of late, and we’ve not been disappointed with anything we’ve purchased. We suspect you won’t be either.
