1e Hulp Coffeeshop is located on Marnixstraat, at the western edge of Amsterdam Centrum. Just across the canal to the west is the s100 ring, a busy street that wraps around the city center and serves as a border for many neighborhoods. To the west is the section of the city known, appropriately, as Amsterdam-West. 1e Hulp is far enough out from the hustle and bustle of the centre that it is more commonly frequented by locals than tourists, though it gets its fair share of both. A reputation for quality cannabis, and some history of participating in marijuana competitions, has strengthened interest among tourists, who often make a special trip to see this interesting coffeeshop.
The name of this shop literally translates into “First Help”. Perhaps they are referring to the palliative or medicinal benefits of cannabis. Either way, 1e Hulp is a shop of interest for a couple of reasons. The first and most obvious; the décor and atmosphere. This coffeeshop is quite nicely appointed, with an ornate Arabian theme throughout. It is also somewhat roomy, existing on three separate levels. You enter on the main floor, where you will find the cannabis serving counter. Upstairs is the shop’s largest seating room. Though perhaps not expansive, it is quite comfortable, with plush couches and intricate wood-carved furniture. 1e Hulp is one of several shops in the city that has a resident cat. This one is quite friendly, and often found chilling out in the upstairs lounge.
Downstairs you will find an additional room for seating; perhaps the shop’s most notable. There are couches, stools, and small tables here. Like the upstairs, everything is beautiful and plush. In the back, however, you will find something a bit extra on this floor... what would aptly be described as a “grand” seating area. Here, there is a small open section of room, elevated by a step-up platform. The section hosts a large plush U-shaped couch, and dark wood-carved coffee table. If you are with a group of people, be sure to check it out.
The cannabis menu at 1e Hulp is fairly robust. The larger selection is on the weed-side, where you are likely to find over two dozen strains. These are some traditional Amsterdam favorites, but more so contemporary strains, many with USA genetics. The hash-side of the menu is also quite rich. These are mainly imported sieved press hashes, though they also usually stock some more potent ice-o-lator varieties. The edibles are also quite good. Where as the norm is one style space cake, this shop usually has several flavors and styles of muffins and cakes. Lastly, their pre-rolled joints selection is also quite good.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. One of the best
One of the best, if not THE BEST in Amsterdam
Nice coffeshop wit resonable prices and good service. Good weed and hash in all price ranges with 2 nice seating areas, guarded by the house cat Rizzla.
Worst service ever, budtender didn’t even say hello, didn’t give a list of available products, looked spaced out and answered his cellphone while we were ordering (or trying to). Medium to high prices and low availability. Too hyped. Ruined me an evening.
