420 Café is found on Oudebrugsteeg, or in English, Old Bridge Alley. This is a small side street off of the Damrak, a main artery into the city center. The immediate area around this coffeeshop is amongst the busiest in Amsterdam. Likewise, it often gets packed with tourists; hustling in and out of Dam Square and the local high-end shopping district that runs between Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk. If you can find a seat in here though, 420 can be a nice place to take a break from the crowds.
This coffeeshop is also known by another name, De Kuil. This translates into “The Pit”. In stark contrast to this name, 420 has a beautiful hardwood interior - the floors, trim, exposed ceilings, and especially the large ornate bar counter with glass-enclosed shelving behind it. The tables, chairs and stools are also wood, and traditional in style. This all makes the place look more like an upscale café or brew house, than a traditional Dutch coffeeshop.
The cannabis menu at 420 Café is not very large. On the weed-side, there are usually about half a dozen items. The genetics here are mainly old-school. You should find things like Blueberry, White Widow, and Haze hybrids. However, you are also likely to find a contemporary strain or two. This is a popular shop that sees a lot of tourist traffic, many of whom are looking for USA strains these days. For hashish, the options are fewer, but they tend to be quality imports. 420 also makes some good edibles, usually in a couple of varieties.
Aside from cannabis, this shop also makes pretty good coffee. There is also a decent selection of sodas and other drinks, as well as some basic snacks to keep you comfortable.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
