Babylon Coffeeshop is a reggae-themed establishment. It sits on a small side street parallel to the Damrak, just behind the Beurs van Berlage. A beautiful example of modern Dutch architecture, the Beurs van Berlage once served as the location of the Dutch Stock Exchange. It now functions as a venue for concerts, conferences, and other events. Babylon sits on a fairly quiet street behind it, directly next to a Police (Politie) station, off all things. In most cities, purchasing cannabis so close to a building full of police officers would be anxiety-filled. In Amsterdam, one may say it is oddly comforting. That is the beauty of Dutch tolerance.
Babylon Coffeeshop sits on one level. As you walk in the front door, there is a long counter to the left. Here you can review the menu and purchase cannabis products, as well as hot and cold beverages. As you walk in further, you will find a doorway and glass partition against the back wall. Behind it is the shop’s smoking lounge. The room décor is contemporary and moderate in size. There is comfortable black leather bench seating lining the walls, along with several small wooden tables and stools. There is also a flat screen television. It will likely to be playing something on low volume, so as to not drown out the chill or reggae ambient music.
The cannabis menu at Babylon is considerable in size. On the weed side you will find about a dozen strains or so. Expect to find a mix of old school favorites, along with some newer varieties. The hashish options are typically imported, much of it (though not exclusively) from Morocco. While most are traditional pressed varieties, you are likely to also find some high quality imported ice-o-lator hash here.
Babylon is perhaps most well known for its modest prices. For a shop that is in the tourist-packed city center, it is considered a more reasonable option. The hashish tends to be of especially good value, as well as quality. If you find something you really like, ask about offers for discounts on 5 gram purchases.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. Superb staff, comfortable relaxing, wide ranging menu, I highly recomnend
Babylon Coffeeshop is a small but comfortable shop, which rests on one of the less trafficked streets in the city center. They have an excellent quality hashish menu, and further, a reputation for value pricing. This is a very good establishment, and worth a detour if you are in the area.
