Barraka Coffeeshop is located on Gravenstraat (Grave Street), a small side street near Dam Square. The street is closed to automobiles, though it is heavy in foot traffic given its proximity to key Amsterdam attractions. One end of this street leads to De Nieuwe Kerk. This translates as The New Church. Contrary to its name, this is a famous and old church-turned-museum, concert, and exhibition hall. At the other end of this street is Nieuwendijk (New Dike), a busy section of the city’s most popular shopping district.
Barraka is a small shop on one floor, with much less grandeur than this neighboring architectural marvel. Its décor is still quite impressive though; we would say reminiscent of an upscale bar or café. There is a lot of dark wood inside, and a beautiful, polished bar where you place your order. It feels familiar; comfortable. As a bonus on warm days, you will find a couple of small café tables outside. The street is not what one would describe as picturesque, though a fairly quiet place to relax and escape the madness of Dam Square.
The cannabis menu at Barraka Coffeeshop is representative of the feeling they cultivate in this establishment. It is presented in a red leather folder with gold lettering on the outside. You know, the type of over-the-top presentation you expect to find at an upscale steakhouse. The selection here is extensive. On the weed side you might find roughly two dozen (yep) strains, almost exclusively old-school favorites. They are categorized by potency, medium, medium/strong, and strong. More than a dozen types of hash are sold at Barraka as well, listed under the categories Moroccan hashes, dark hashes, and very special hash. Mostly pressed imports, though they do carry an isolator variety or two. They also sell pre-rolled joints, space cakes, and hash infused tea.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
