Black Star Coffeeshop is located on Rozengracht (Roses Canal), in the Jordaan district. This is a famous upscale neighborhood, with many galleries, restaurants, and boutique shops. There is an energetic vibe in this part of the city. The street that Black Star is found on is particularly busy, and highly trafficked by both cars and tourists. This establishment is hard to miss. It resides in the lower two levels of a a very distinct cream and red colored building. Outside is a large neon "Coffeeshop" sign. There is also a second smaller sign with their logo, which depicts lips smoking a joint on a bright red, yellow, and green background.
Inside Black Star you find an African-themed coffeeshop. The decor presents mainly continental-focused colors and artwork. The full name of this shop is actually "African Black Star Coffeeshop", though it tends to be known as just Black Star. The fact that the sign just reads "Coffeeshop Black Star" probably has something to do with it. This shop has a separate ordering area to the front. The budtender will buzz you in after purchasing your smokeable of choice, and/or a snack or beverage.
Once inside, you will see a standard fare of wooden seating and tables. The room is basic, but welcoming at the same time. You will notice a closed glass room to the side. This is the shop's tobacco smoking area. Look a little farther on and you’ll also see a rainbow painted staircase, which leads to a second, smaller seating area below. This basement room is popular, especially when the main smoking room gets too busy, and for those that prefer a more relaxed vibe or private conversation.
The cannabis menu at Black Star offers a fairly large assortment of both flower (weed) and hashish options. The genetics on the weed side tend to be traditional; the types of old-school strains long established as Amsterdam favorites. The hashish side is also traditional, a selection of pressed imports from Morocco and other common source countries. There is also a small selection of edibles (space cakes) here, if preferred.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
