Boerejongens is a takeaway coffeeshop found on Baarsjesweg, in the De Baarsjes neighborhood of Amsterdam West. This part of the city is newer than many sections of Amsterdam. It is also a largely residential neighborhood, with a high density of more modern-style block apartment buildings. De Barjees is not heavily trafficked by tourists, and is a bit less hectic than the city center. Rembrandt park is also to the west, if you want to visit one of the city’s nicest green areas.
The Dutch word Boerenjongen translates in English to “Farmer Boy”. This is one of three “Farmer Boys” locations. The decor of this shop (like all three locations) is quite distinct from most Dutch cannabis establishments. Instead of being austere, it is elegant. When you walk in you will find a room that resembles an early 20th century city pharmacy or bank. Giant marble tiles make up the floor. There is a long wooden counter in the back half of the shop, with marble top. Behind the counter, a full wall of old wooden cabinets and shelves. When you haven’t caught the attention of wood or marble, you are probably staring at some brass accent. The place is beautiful.
Though this coffeeshop has en elegant early 20th century appearance on the inside, there is a modern edge to it. The operations of Boerejongen's resemble that of a Colorado medical marijuana dispensary. There is a rope line in the front of the counter, directing customers to que when busy. The displays include a lot of seeds and genetics references. A visit to this shop is about making a purchase, but the environment is clinical... very serious about cannabis. Likewise, one will find the staff to be knowledgable about marijuana strains and pharmacology. The shop also hosts an interactive computer system, which helps shoppers sort through their list of varieties to find the best options for their needs. In short, this is not your traditional Dutch "weed bar".
To one side of Boerejongen's one will find a small room with couch seating and a fixed table in the center. This is a "rolling" room. Though you are not allowed to consume cannabis on the premises, you can rest here for a few minutes to prepare your purchases before stepping out. Perhaps they find inside seating largely unnecessary here. There is bench seating right outside, beside a picturesque canal. There are not many better places to relax and enjoy a smoke on a nice sunny day. Boerejongen's is considered a connoisseur establishment. They are active in entering cannabis competitions, and have numerous winning strains to their credit.
