Boerejongens West
About
Boerejongens West is a takeaway coffeeshop found on Baarsjesweg, in the De Baarsjes neighborhood of Amsterdam West. This part of the city is newer than most sections of Amsterdam. It is also a largely residential neighborhood, with a high density of more modern-style block apartment buildings. De Baarsjes is not heavily trafficked by tourists, and is a bit less hectic than the city center. Rembrandt Park is also to the west, if you want to visit one of the city’s nicest green areas.
The Dutch word Boerenjongen translates into “Farmer Boy” in English. This is one of four “Farmer Boys” locations. The décor of this shop (like all three locations) is quite distinct from most Dutch cannabis establishments. Instead of being austere, it is elegant. When you walk in you will find a room that resembles an early 20th century city pharmacy or bank. Giant marble tiles make up the flooring. There is a long wooden counter with a marble top in the rear half of the shop. Behind the counter is a full wall of old wooden cabinets and shelves. The place is simply beautiful.
Though this coffeeshop has en elegant early 20th century appearance on the inside, there is a modern edge to it. The operations of Boerejongens resemble that of a Colorado medical marijuana dispensary. There is a rope line in the front of the counter, directing customers to queue when busy. The displays include a lot of seeds and genetics references. A visit to this shop is about making a purchase. The environment is clinical. Likewise, one will find the staff to be knowledgable about marijuana strains and pharmacology. In short, this is not your traditional Dutch “weed bar.”
Boerejongens hosts an interactive computer system for its menu, which helps shoppers sort through their offerings to find the best options for them. And what is on order? This shop has been very active in entering cannabis competitions, and has numerous award-winning products to their credit. You can order some of them right here. On the weed side, expect to find contemporary genetics. Think Kush, Diesel, fruity hybrids. For hashish, they specialize in highly flavorful imported “Block” varieties from Morocco, though you can find some more potent nederhasj as well. And when it comes to edibles, this shop really stands out. We highly recommend a stop here if you are shopping for some.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
