Coffeeshop 137 is close to Haarlemmerstraat, a busy tourist street noted for its trendy cafés, craft businesses, and high-end coffee shops. In spite of its proximity to this bustling location, 137 is a bit set to the side. You will find it in a more residential neighborhood just to the southwest. It is not quite as popular or well-known as some of its neighbors to the east. As such, it is less busy with tourists than many of the other shops in the immediate area. This is probably a plus for the locals so not to deal with the throngs of tourists. However, 137 draws its fair share of travelers so one should not view this as a “locals” place.
Coffeeshop 137 exists on one level. While perhaps not expansive in its size, the interior is quite comfortable and welcoming. The one-room shop has sufficient seating for visitors on most afternoons. While it looks like a traditional Dutch shop by the exterior, its décor leans towards contemporary. Seating consists of comfortable couch seating which lines the walls, as well as pull-out leather stools and benches. The best seating, however, is perhaps found on the benches outside. They are not quite as plush as the seating inside, but does provide a perfect location to light a joint or bowl, and soak in the wonder of the Brouwersgracht Canal.
The cannabis menu at 137 is moderate in size. For weed, they usually stock close to a dozen items. They like contemporary genetics here. Expect to see some USA strains such as the OG and Kush hybrids. Being a shop with a lot of local business, they also stock some traditional items. You are likely to find several Amnesia and White Widow type options here. The hash menu is roughly the same size. Again, they feature both old and new. Potent Dutch isolator (Nederhasj) is found side-by-side with traditional pressed imports from Morocco, Nepal, and Afghanistan. There is a large pre-roll menu here, and there are plenty of glass bongs found throughout for customer use.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS.
