Coffeeshop 156 is found in the Hoofdweg en omgeving neighborhood of Amsterdam West. This translates roughly as “Main Road and Surroundings” in English. The name is probably too generic, as it does a poor job of describing the tranquil old streets that make up this predominantly residential neighborhood. Coffeeshop 156 is also close to Rembrandtpark (Rembrandt Park), one of the most beautiful parks in the city. While this area is far enough from Amsterdam Centrum that you see fewer tourists here, it is every bit as worthy of a visit.
Like many of the other numbered establishments, this coffeeshop gets its name from its address: 156 Hudsonstraat. While not very imaginative, it works. Like its name, the shop itself is also best described as low-key. As you enter this establishment, you will find a small ordering desk. It is very basic, and glass-encased as if it were in a rough part of the city - something we would not describe this neighborhood as. Visible from the entryway and lobby, there appears to be a small seating area (enough for four or five people) in the back. Although this would be a sufficient amount of space, albeit a small one, for a smoking lounge, it goes unused as it is for employees only. Likewise, this place serves as a take-and-go establishment only at this time.
The cannabis selection at 156 is moderate in size. For weed, expect maybe a dozen options. These are mainly long-established local strains. The hashish menu is much smaller, with less than a half dozen options on most visits. These are exclusively traditional pressed imports.
Even down to their name, Coffeeshop 156 appears to value simplicity and the simple art of providing their community a quality cannabis selection. Likewise, no extra amenities are offered here such as food or drink.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
