De Keeper Coffeeshop is located on Van Woustraat, in the Diamantbuurt section of Amsterdam-Zuid (south). Diamantbuurt translates into “Diamond Neighborhood” in English. This was once Amsterdam’s diamond district, built up during the early 1900s next to the famous diamond cutter Asscher. While this part of the city is no longer identified as a jewelry center, it is a well developed residential area, with a good share of restaurants, cafes, and other businesses. If looking for a change of pace, you might find it in a neighborhood like this.
“De Keeper” translates into “The Keeper” in English. This refers to a goalkeeper or goalie, a pivotal position in the game of football; soccer to Americans. For those wondering if the sport was the intended imagery, and not another for De Keeper, look no further than the shop logo. It is a stick-figure of a goalkeeper guarding a net holding weed.
Inside De Keeper one will find a coffeeshop with basic decor. Comfortable and real, just not flashy. The front room hosts a quick pickup window, for those just looking for a quick weed purchase. If you are for more than a buy and fly though, the back of the shop hosts its smoking lounge. This includes a glassed-off partition, to legally allow for tobacco smoking. In the lounge you will find some leather couches and a large flat screen TV. It is a nicely furnished room and comfortable. If you are looking for somewhere to watch the game, De Keeper coffeeshop might serve you well.
The cannabis menu at this coffeeshop likely reflects its predominantly local clientele. It is moderate in size, and tends to list more traditional items. This means Amsterdam favorite strains of weed. Think of items like Amnesia, White Widow, and Silver Haze; strains that made Amsterdam genetics so famous. On the hashish side, this means mainly traditional imported pressed varieties of hashish, though they have been known to stock stronger domestic ice-o-lator too. In addition, you can find the basic pre-rolled joint (weed and hash), and the standard option space cake.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
