Dolphins Coffeeshop is located on Kerkstraat (Church Street), towards the southwest edge of the city center. It is close to the Leidseplein, which is among the most popular destinations in Amsterdam for food, shopping, and nightlife. The front door of Dolphins is just a few steps off Leidsestraat, the main road leading to the Leidseplein. Likewise, the area around here is heavily trafficked with city visitors.
Upon walking into this shop you will almost certainly first notice the décor. It is elaborately handcrafted from top to bottom, and takes on a deep sea theme. Dolphins, coral, sea urchin surround you in unbelievably detailed 3D sculptures and plaster decorations. Much of the remaining exposed parts of the walls are painted in sea blue color. You feel like you are on a Disney ride, “Under The Sea” most appropriately.
Upstairs you will find the counter for ordering cannabis products, as well as a variety of coffees, teas, drinks, and snacks. You will also find a station with two large glass vaporizers. These are Verdamper style; a hybrid between a traditional bong and a whip vaporizer. There are also a handful of tables up here with high top seating.
Downstairs “Under the Sea” takes on a whole new meaning. When you enter this room you will feel like you climbed into a 20th century submarine. Once again, the presentation is incredibly intricate and beautiful. This room is the coffeeshop lounge. It is much more open than the upstairs, and hosts a section of huge padded booths. Tobacco smoking is permitted here, as the basement is closed off from the rest of the shop. The area is well ventilated. It is also at street level, so the front windows can be opened when the weather is nice. There are flat screen TV’s down here, and a vending machine for snacks if you are just a bit too relaxed to trek back upstairs.
The cannabis menu at Dolphins Coffeeshop is not extensive. It includes maybe a half dozen flower (weed) strains, and several varieties of hashish. Most are named after the shop; items such as “Dolphin Kush and White Dolphin.” They also sell pre-rolled joints, and make a mean Space Muffin edible. It is of note that this shop has a history of entering cannabis competitions. At times, their entries have definitely stood out for their quality. You can usually find some solid product here, even if the selection is not vast.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. Great Staff, nice weed and spacecake. The shop looks great.
Dolphins is a beautiful coffeeshop with a floor to ceiling deep sea theme that extends over two levels. They have a chill vibe and quality cannabis menu. This is an excellent establishment, worth a visit if you are in the area.
As a long time visitor to Amsterdam I am very disappointed with my visit today.
After a few hours doing stuff with the family I popped in for a quick smoke. Politely made my entrance and asked for a drink, to which I was told you must buy at least 1 g to sit and smoke.
This is a new policy to me, never had this on any previous visits to Dolphins over the last 15 years. I questioned the policy having said I’ve never had this problem but she said she doesn’t remember me
