El Marssa Coffeeshop is located on Witte de Withstraat, in the De Krommerdt neighborhood of Amsterdam-West. Like many areas of Amsterdam, this neighborhood is growing. It is youthful, diverse, and upwardly mobile. The immediate area around El Marssa has many families of Turkish, Moroccan, and Surinamese descent, and is home to one of the city’s strong muslim communities. It is largely residential here. Expect quieter walks, and fewer bars and nightclubs than you find in many other areas close to the centre. El Marssa is also between two picturesque tree-lined canals. We highly recommend taking a stroll beside one when you are in the area.
While we would not regard this coffeeshop as large, El Marssa is still fairly roomy. In the front, one will find a counter for ordering cannabis products. They also serve juices, soft drinks, and basic snacks here, and make a variety of hot coffees and teas. Once you make your purchase, you can get buzzed into the closed room in the back. Here you will find the shop’s smoking lounge area.
The lounge at El Marssa is not especially elaborate or luxurious. However, we would describe it as both comfortable and “real”. This is largely a locals’ place... people know each other here, and they are not coming for the fancy décor. Do not let this deter you if you are visiting the city. In our experience, they welcome anyone in the door. There is also a closed tobacco smoking room in the back, so that this shop can stay in compliance with EU smoking regulations. If you prefer mixed joints, be sure to take advantage of it.
The cannabis menu at El Marssa is moderate in size. This is not a big shop with strain hunters. On the weed-side, expect to find several old school favorites, alongside a couple of more contemporary items. While interesting, this shop is much more known for its hash. On menu here are usually pressed imports from Morocco. Though the selection is not vast, the quality can be exceptional. This shop seems to be quite popular with local hash smokers. With consistent product at a fair price, we can understand why.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
