Rock It Coffeeshop is located on Nieuwmarkt (New Market) square. This section of the city has a high density of businesses including restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and of course, coffeeshops. There is a lot of history here. In the center of the square you will find a 15th century building known as the Waag (“Weigh House”). A long time ago, when Amsterdam had an outer wall, this was one of the entrance gates. It served many purposes after, even hosting a guillotine at one point. Inside today, you will find a posh restaurant. The Nieuwmarkt is one of the most popular spots with visitors to the city. Likewise, the area is usually quite crowded.
The inside of this coffeeshop is not what most people expect. Given its name, a theme along the lines of Hard Rock Café would seem in order… a shop plastered with rock-and-roll posters and memorabilia. Instead, you will find a contemporary lounge that feels more like an urban coffee house or café. Green and brown colors dominate the interior, providing an earthy vibe. There is tribute to influential musicians here, but it not necessarily a collection of rock icons. The music décor seems more like an accent than a focal point for the main theme of the shop.
Rock It is split into two levels. On the main floor is the shop’s ordering counter. Here, you can purchase cannabis, along with some basic refreshments. Once you have made your purchase, you can head upstairs to the lounge. The area is quite comfortable. Long padded benches run the length of most walls, with small chairs and stools provided for additional seating. Modern light fixtures and exposed wooden beams solidify a contemporary urban vibe here. If you prefer fresh air though, you can also find several sets of tables and chairs in front of the shop. This is prime seating if you like to watch the crowds go by.
The cannabis menu at Rock It coffeeshop is substantial in size. For weed, you can typically find more than a dozen strains. These are usually a mix of old and new genetics. For hashish, they have a smaller but still fairly large selection of pressed imports. They also sell pre-rolled joints and edibles. When it comes to pricing, remember this is a major tourist area so you are likely to pay a bit more. Aside from cannabis, they make decent coffee, and have a pretty standard selection of drinks and snacks.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.
