Roots

About

Roots Coffeeshop is a new addition to Amsterdam’s cannabis scene. It opened in the summer of 2017, in Amsterdam-Zuidoost (Southeast). It is right near Amsterdam Arena. This section of the city is a bit removed from the old city center, and is actually quite newly developed. The neighborhood hosts a lot of commercial activity, mixed with many modern large block apartment buildings. There are no other coffeeshops in the immediate area, making Roots the sole neighborhood option for cannabis, if you live or plan on staying in this part of the city.

Inside Roots Coffeeshop, one will find a decidedly contemporary establishment. Its hardwood floors, polished light-colored wood furniture, and an overall black, white, and wood scheme for décor make the place feel more like a modern office than a coffeeshop. The newness of its construction is quite visible. This shop also has a lot of glass, creating a very open, bright, and clean feeling which only adds to the office vibe. Large cushion-topped benches, chairs and tables provide plenty of seating in the back. Though perhaps unconventional, Roots can be a highly comfortable place to chill.

The cannabis menu is fairly large at Roots Coffeeshop, especially considering this is an isolated location for the area. On the weed-size, expect to find a dozen items or so. They have a lot of traditional strains here, old school Amsterdam favorites… though you may still encounter some contemporary USA genetics, such as Kush hybrids. The hashish menu is smaller, but still quite sizable. The items are traditional pressed imports. They also have space cake, and plenty of pre-rolled joint options here, if preferred. List is largely a locals’ shop. Pricing can be quite reasonable here compared to what you will find in the city center.

Beyond cannabis, they have coffee, tea, hot toasties, and a standard selection of juices, soda, and basic snacks on the menu.

This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.

Favorite Stop

Stayed in Zoodist for a time this shop was easy to find and has a delightful staff. It’s right next to the arena metro stop. Started my morning off here every day, cup of coffee/latte and a rolling session. They took great care of us and even let me keep the water pipe I purchased in the shop for reuse. If you want straight cannibis and not a splif roll your own. This is for all Amsterdam coffee shops even if the menu says “pure”. Thanks Roots!!

Great coffee shop , but no coffee

A Great time at the coffee shop, but no coffee. They have a wide menu of flavors for marijuana. They do have drinks, and a incredible spice cake ! THE wait staff there are very reputable! They can recommend what flavor will suit your desire!
