The Spirit Coffeeshop is found in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, known for being a more peaceful section of the busy city center. Over the years the Jordaan has become one of the most desirable (and expensive) areas of the city to live in. Consequently, this neighborhood has experienced a great deal of economic growth and has attracted many new businesses. There is no shortage of small restaurants, cafés, trendy boutiques, and art galleries. These of course fit comfortably alongside plenty of old Dutch residential buildings, making this both a fun and beautiful part of the city.
The Sprit is an establishment that would be best described as a cross between a traditional Dutch coffeeshop and a retro amusement center. Its interior is traditional with a lot of wood, and not a lot of frills. Not the place you will find granite tile floors, leather couches, and a full menu.
The above is not to say The Spirit Coffeeshop is boring. To the contrary, its “retro amusement center” side makes this one of the most interesting coffeeshops in the city. While many boast an old video game or pinball machine, The Spirit is like an old-school arcade. There is no other establishment like it in Amsterdam. Inside you will find a full wall of pinball machines (eight in total), a retro multi-arcade, and even a dual cockpit car racing game. If you enjoy playing old video games and/or pinball while consuming cannabis products, The Spirt is without question the place for you!
The retro arcade aspect of The Spirit aside, this is a fairly traditional Dutch coffeeshop. The cannabis menu usually reflects a mix of old-school weed strains, along with imported varieties of hashish. They tend not to chase the latest award-winning genetics. The pricing is a bit more reasonable here than many shops in the city center as well. This is probably owing to the strong local clientele. Though The Spirit Coffeeshop is frequented by tourists (incidentally, some just looking for the retro games), the bulk of the visitors seem to be from the area.
It is also of note that they serve coffee, tea, soft drinks, juices, and some basic snacks here. Not a full service restaurant, but has more than enough to keep the munchies at bay, and you tapping away on the buttons.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.

The Spirit is a truly unique establishment. No other coffeeshop in the city has such an extensive retro pinball/arcade collection, making this a paradise for old school gamers and retro fanatics.
