Tweede Kamer Coffeeshop is located on Heisteeg (Health Alley), a small side street on the edge of Spui square. This is a busy area for foot traffic, and among the more popular tourist destinations. Most people actually miss it, but this is the heart of the Amsterdam book scene. In addition to a nearly endless selection of small boutiques and cafés, if you look around the area you will find a high density of independent bookstores. This is a mecca for bookworms; the place in Amsterdam you want to go when searching for that first edition of something special. It is charming, even if you are not a bookworm.
The name of this shop translates into “second room” in English. There is political meaning in this phrase. Tweede Kamer is the Dutch House of Representatives, a main branch of their elected government. The owners of this coffeeshop are not politicians, however. Actually, they are rooted in the coffeeshop industry, and have another famous shop to their credit: Coffeeshop Amsterdam. It may be a passive, thumbing of the nose at authorities. Whatever it is, it is memorable. We like it.
This shop first opened its doors in 1985. In the time since, Tweede Kamer has built itself up to be one of the more recognized coffeeshops in the city center. The décor in this shop is “modernized traditional.” It is elegant, without the flash. The interior has an upscale pub or brown bar feel to it. There is a great deal of beautiful polished wood throughout - the bar counter, tables, booths, trim on the walls. This is accompanied by an ample collection of framed old pictures, artwork, and high-end fixtures.
This place is not big, which perhaps adds to its distinct warm and cozy atmosphere. This shop would actually make an excellent bar of a coffeeshop, had the city not banned such establishments years ago. No matter. Tweed Kamer is in a busy area of the city center, and is a long established brand here. Even without the draw of serving alcohol, this place does great business, as evidenced by how crowded it can get on most afternoons.
Tweede Kamer is noted for its quality cannabis menu, not surprising given the owners. They offer a diverse variety of weed (flower) and hashish (concentrade) options here. The imported hashes, in particular, tend to be quite exceptional. Many options are rich and flavorful in our experience. They also serve great coffee, along with teas, juices, drinks, and a selection of small snacks.
This shop is featured in our 368 page Hardcover book CONNOISSEUR GUIDE: AMSTERDAM COFFEESHOPS. A MUST-HAVE for any serious visitor to the Amsterdam scene, it is the first book ever to profile all 168 coffeeshops in the city, with vivid full-color pictures, detailed descriptions, amenities, and locals/regulars recommendations for the "best of" shops in a variety of categories.

Sister shop to the famous De Dampkring, Tweede Kamer is smaller with a lot less dramatic flair. Even so, this shop is warm, classy, and comfortable. It also boasts a high quality cannabis menu. We feel Tweede Kamer is an excellent establishment, worth a visit if you are in the area.
